Key West Citizen 01/24/2012

Judith (Trevor) Nettles, born April 30, 1934, a lifelong resident of Key West, died peacefully in her home in Brandon on Jan. 21, 2012.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence (Larry) B. Nettles, and her parents, Edwin and Elinor Trevor.

She leaves behind one sister, Ellen Smith (John); three children, Victoria Parsons (Mac), Lawrence B. Nettles Jr. (Grace) and Ellen Frogner (Jim); four grandchildren, Shelley, Jonathan, Sara Jeanne and Jimmy; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan and Aiden.

She was just 78 but never fully recovered from Larry's death in 2007 after 53 years of marriage. Although she had been in significant pain for several years, she was a wise, warm and loving mother, grandmother and friend. Everyone who knew her will miss her.

Judy graduated from the Convent of Mary Immaculate in 1951 and the University of Florida in 1955. She was a faithful member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She and Larry owned and operated American Beauty Florist in Key West for a number of years and served in the soup kitchen at St. Mary's.

She will be buried next to Larry in a graveside service at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25 at the Key West City Cemetery. It will be followed by a celebration of her life at Square One on Duval Street.

In lieu of flowers, please contribute to hospice or the soup kitchen at St. Mary's.

The Dean-Lopez Funeral Home in Key West is in charge of all arrangements.

Key West Citizen 03/01/2007

Lawrence "Larry" Brown Nettles, a 50-year resident of Key West, died peacefully at home on Feb. 25, 2007.

He was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on March 27, 1932, to Jesse Frank and Maxine Brown Nettles.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Judy; and three lucky children, Vicki Parsons, Lawrence Brown Nettles Jr. and Ellen Frogner; five grandchildren; and a sister, Frances McGraw.

Mr. Nettles graduated from the University of Florida in 1954, and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity there. He married Judy Trevor in 1955, and served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant in Colorado Springs, Colo. After his military service was concluded, they moved to Key West. He and Mrs. Nettles owned and operated American Beauty Florist until 1996.

He served as president of Old Island Restoration Foundation for five years during its formative stage and was largely responsible for the restoration of the Oldest House Museum and Gardens in the early 1970s. He also served the community of Key West in the Soup Kitchen, with the Literacy Coalition and as a Guardian Ad Litem.
He was a loving husband who cherished his wife and family, a wise, kind and humorous father, always generous with his love.

A private graveside service will be held today, Thursday, March 1, 2007. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. at Square One Restaurant, 1075 Duval St., to honor his memory and celebrate his life at his favorite restaurant.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in his name to the St. Mary's Soup Kitchen or Hospice Care of Southeast Florida. Arrangements are by Dean-Lopez Funeral Home.
