September 13, 2023

WW2 US Army Pvt. Roy J. Searle was laid to rest with Full Military Honors  Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at the South Florida National Cemetery, Lake Worth FL.

Members of the Palm Beach Chapter SAR, FLSSAR State Society Officers and other FLSSAR Chapters, and members of the DAR and the SCV attended the service along with other members of the South Florida Veterans Community.  The grave site ceremony included an Army military honor guard, a 21-gun salute, an honor flag ceremony, taps, and prayers.

Private First Class Roy Searle of Graniteville, RI, entered the Army in October of 1942 and served in Company D, 1st Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in the European Theater during the Second World War. He and his unit were part of the group that stormed Utah Beach on D-Day. He was mortally wounded during an enemy engagement on December 9, 1944, and was reported to have died of his wounds near Rehlingen, Germany just prior to the Battle of the Bulge. The American forces were forced to retreat suddenly, not able to recover the bodies of their dead comrades. To their credit, the German soldiers interred, with dignity, the bodies of the fallen Americans in a civilian cemetery. His remains were not identified during the war.

From 1946 to 1950 his remains and those of others were transferred from that civilian cemetery in Germany to the United States Military Cemetery St. Laurent, France, now the Normandy American Cemetery.

In June of 2021, the Department of Defense and the American Battle Monuments Commission exhumed the remains which were then sent for testing. On September 27, 2022, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced that U.S. Army PFC Roy J. Searle, 22, was accounted for.

At the time of his death (1944), his survivors included his wife Gertrude A. Searle, his parents Harvey and Mabel Searle, and his twin brother Raymond Searle (Madelyn).
