FUNERAL FOR AGED VETERAN SET TODAY

Following services this morning at 10 o'clock at the Pahokee Baptist Church, with the Rev. S. F. Beard officiating, W. E. Compton Camp, United Spanish War Veterans, will accord the Rev. A. J. York full military rites at the graveside in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. W. H. Lair, G. A. Waites, S. B. McDowell, L. T. Keen, J. C. Mock, and A. R. Rice.


Active pallbearers are O. B. McClure, B. Elliott, A. Hodges, H. L. Speer, D. W. Crocker and R.P. Fletcher.


Pallbearers are asked to meet at the Everglades Funeral Home at 9:30 o'clock this morning. Friends may view the body between 8 and 10 o'clock at the Baptist Church
 

Mr.[York, who would have been 97 next March 19, died Wednesday morning at the York Hotel, Pahokee, where he had made his home with his son, Ira and family, He was the last Confederate veteran of Palm Beach County.
 

Members of the Thomas Benton Ellis Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy, are requested to meet at Woodlawn Cemetery at 12:15 o'clock today to attend services in a body. Don Boggess, commander of the local Legion post, alsa requests all members of the post who can do so, attend the graveside services, wearing Legion caps.
 

Mr. [York] who was born in Franklin County, Ga, March 19, 1842, was wounded in defense of Port Hudson and later saw service as cavalryman under Gen. Joe Wheeler. He was ordained a Baptist minister 45 years ago and organized the Pahoked Baptist Church.
 

Surviving besides the son with whom Mr, York lived is another son, George, who lives in Tampa.


Spanish War veterans are asked to attend the graveside services in uniform.

YORK LEAVES ESTATE TO HIS CHLILdREN

The last will of Andrew Jackson York, Pahokee, Palm Beach County’s last Confederate veteran, who died there December 28, was admitted to probate Wednesday by County Judge R. P. Robbins.

 

Mr. York bequeathed his estate to his children and grandchildren.  He left a half interest in the York Hotel at to his. Sor, Ira York, Pahokee.
 

The remainder was bequeathed as follows: One-sixth to a son, George Henry [York] of Tampa; one-sixth to a daughter, Fannie Jane York one-sixth to his son, Ira York, (in addition to the hotel bequest); one-sixth to children of his late daughter, Sallie Alice Colson, Raymond Lee Colson, John York Colson, Lillie Colson Carver, Frank Colson and Jessie May Colson Clifford; one-sixth to children of his late daughter, Annie Brown, Yandle O. Brown, Harold O. Brown, Louis Brown Whiton, and Charles S, Brown; and one-sixth to children of his deceased son, James R. York; Margaret York, Van Jackson York and Hannah York. 
 

 

The two surviving sons were appointed co-executors by the court. Gedney, Johnston & Lilienthal are attorneys for the estate.

Mr. and Mrs. Cross Buy York Hotel At Pahokee
 

Pahokee – The York Hotel, one of the leading hostelries in Pahokee since its construction on Belle Glade Rd., in 1934, has been sold by Mr. and Mrs. Ira York to Mr. and Mrs. W. A. “Cricket” Cross. The first floor of the building is occupied by the Dry Goods Company.  | The new owners of the hotel will assume management this coming week. Mr. and Mrs. York plan | to continue making their. home in this community.

Pahokee To Get 12-Room Hotel

​

PAHOKER—W. A. Cross, prominent vegetable grower and hotel proprietor here, will erect a modern, air-conditioned Hotel here as soon as materials are available, he revealed Monday. The 42-room structure will be adjacent to the frame York hotel on Main Street

​

Plans for the three-story building have been completed by Manly King, West Palm Beach architect. The modern hotel will be built at a cost of approximately $140,000 and will cover the property now housing the Lions club building.

Mindlin Buys Hotel At Pahokee

PAHOKEE — The Cross Hotel on Lake Ave. has been purchased by Karl Mindlin from Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Cross Sr. who have moved to their farm at Doret north of Canal Point.

​

Known originally as the York Hotel, it will be named the Big Lake Hote.  It was built by the late Rev. A. J. York a pioneer settler, who helped organize the First Baptist Church.

Baptist Churrch Sunday To Mark 30th Anniversary

​

PAHOKEE-- Thr Pahokee First Baptist Church will observe its 30th anniverasry at a special service Sunday at 1:30 pm, with the public invited.

     When the church was organized in 1922 the first service was held in the community church building on Bacom Point, with the Rev. A. J. York as first pastor.  The Rev. E. M.C. Dunkin, Okeechobee, preached the first sermon.  Of the 24 charter members only one, Mrs. Gene Butler.,is still an active member.

     The abnniversary service will be preceded by a fellowship dinner on the church grounds.  Interesting sidelights on the early history of the church will be given, including a description of the colorful preacher-missionary, "Brother Dunkin," who rode  to Pahokee on horseback to preach the first sermon.

​

The story of the construction of the first church building by the men of the congregation in four days will also be told.  The church has since used two other buildings as places of worship and a campaign is now underway to raise funds tfor the erection of a fourth structure in keeping with  the membership growth.

     The first pastor, the Rev. A. J. York, was followed by the Rev. Cecil and the Rev. Nolte, and these were followed by the Revs. E. L. Williamson, Earl Lewis, W. C. Taylor, S. . Rennicks, James P. Rodgers, Jack Dalton, Spencer Beard, Carl A. Moberg, Hoke H. Shirley and the present pastor, the Rev. W. Hal Hunter, formerly of Jacksonville, who took over his charge in Pahikee last fall.

LEGION POST HERE TO HONOR LAST VETERAN

LAKE WORTH-- An invitation has been extended to the local Legion post and Auxilliary to atten a dinner meeting of the Pahokk Post will honor the Rev. A. J. York, Pahokee, last surviving Confederate veteran in Palm Beach who will attend the forthcoming Grand Encampment at Gettysburg, for which event he is leaving soon.

     The dinner is sceduled for June 17, at Pahokee, and will be served at the Women's Club there.

During an elecrical storm here Sunday afternoon a valuable horse belonging to Rev. A. J. York, tied to the hitching post in front of Dr. Brown's residence, was struck by lightning, and instatly killed.

Pahokee, May 31, -- Representatives from th local American Legion post who motored to West Palm Beach Monday to place a marker and plaque on the grave of S. W. Powell, former member of the post, on memorial day, were Adjutant George C. Meads, S. C. Enlow, J. Kelly, L. L. Shirley, S. Phillips, and J. Q. Henry.  The Legionaires were accompanied by Mrs. Ora Powell, widow of Mr. Powell, and the Rev. A. J. York, Pahokee's nonogenarian and the only living Civil was veteran in Palm Beach county.
