SOUTH PALM BEACH HOTEL ASSURED BY PURCHASERS OF STOCK YESTERDAY

Over Half Hotel Stock Subscribed at Dedication of Site--Hotel Will Be Erected at Once and Be Ready for Business in December.

More than 1,500 people attended dedication exercises of the new site of the South Palm Beach Inn yesterday afternoon at 2:30 and the new hotel project at this popular resort to the south of its big proud sister was launched in a manner that augers well for its future. Everybody there was a guest of Dr. Fred G. Schwarz, president of the Tourist Club and Mrs. Schwarz, herself a charming and affable hostess.

There were gallons of ice cream and much cake and other delicacies at the Community house. with dancing and music by an orchestra, free boats to and from this city and free bus rides both ways. From the crowd attending the dedication of the site there came the astonishing contribution of S52,000 in stock subscriptions in the new hotel as a tribute from the people to the ability of the promoter as a hotel man, gentleman and a diplomat. Probably never before has such an unusual feat been reported in connection with any building project in this vicinity. The new hotel of l00 rooms will become a reality.

With half the stock already subscribed and much more promised, a blanket mortgage for the remainder of the amount necessary to complete the $100.000 project can readily be obtained.

Ready For Next Season

Dr. Schwarz will advertise for estimates or bids on the project within the next two or three weeks. so that actual work of construction can be started within the next two or three months. The new Inn will be of Spanish mission style of architecture, built along similar lines to the Country Club at Garden City, L.  l.

The property is 250 feet in length along the lake front and 300 in depth, with riparian rights. The hotel building proper will be 175 feet in length with two 100-foot wings on the ends, and the lake front of the hotel which will be of stucco material, equipped with the latest sprinkler system of fire protection. There will be broad porches and a sun parlor,  The grounds will have natural growth of cocoanut-palms and other tropical shrubbery and trees.

It is planned to have the new Inn open for business the first of next December or thereabouts, and it will remain open each season until well towards the first of April. An auto service will be operated by the hotel between South Palm Beach and this city, meeting all trains as well, and there will be boat service across the lake iron the hotel pier so that patrons may go over to the ocean side for bathing purposes.

Fred G. Schwarz, is a successful hotel man with a 500 guest establishment of his own at Wopawaug Lodge, near Easthampton, Connecticut, where he started a summer camp a few years ago with 25 guests and by his own personality and close application to details and personal service, built the hotel patronage to a point where 500 guests are entertained for the entire summer each year. He will return here frequently during the summer months to attend to matters pertaining to the actual construction of the new project.

During the afternoon, there were addresses by Mayer D. F. Dunkle, Ex-Mayor W. A. Dutch, several bankers, other hotel men and Stiles C. Hall, of the realty association. Miss Grace Straw contributed vocal selections at the Community House. Alfred H. Waug and H. E. Robinson contributed their services and were largely instrumental in placing stock.

In South Palm Beach, the outstanding calamity was the virtual destruction of the Miramar Inn, formerly known as the South Palm Beach Inn. Twisted and wrecked by the storm, with the roof blown into nearby dwellings, the building bore evidences that it might defy repairs. The South borough Business block on the Dixie highway was partially destroyed. One of the freaks of the storm was the Miramar pharmacy which pursued business with a minimum of damage, hemmed in on either side by wreckage.

From The Archives

By the 1920s, the City of West Palm Beach, incorporated in 1894, had an abundance of lodgings ranging from boarding houses to large hotels servicing burgeoning tourism in the city. Among the hotels was the grand Pennsylvania Hotel, built in 1926 in the heart of downtown, overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway, where for decades it held distinction as a waterfront landmark before its 1995 demolition. Pictured here. however, is the lesser- known Miramar Inn, as seen on a 1930 postcard. With an Intracoastal view, it was located at 3800 Wash-ington Road just north of Southern Boulevard. Originally built in 1922 and called the Inn South Palm Beach, the Miramar Inn was unveiled later in the 20s. The towered building, which remained a hotel for several decades, was built in the Mission Revival style and the grounds featured extensive tropical plantings and included a pool. The 1930 postcard description reads: The Miramar Inn, one of  West Palm Beach's newer hotels, was built to meet the increased demand for greater accommodations for the popular Palm Beaches, where summer spends the winter. Those who return annually to this delightful community make their reservations well in advance to assure locations." The Miramar Inn was demolished by the 1960s.A condo building now stands on the site -                                M.M.CLOUTIER
