Henry C. Price in Miami

From the book “A Dark and Lonely Place”
 By Edna Buchanan

Henry Choice Price was a Georgia planter before the Civil War and became a firebrand blockade runner for the Confederacy.  He then morphed after the war into an upstate Florida citrus grower.  He gave that up when a major winter freeze wiped out his entire orange crop.  He proceeded to move his family south – to Miami.

Henry built a small three-story hotel in Miami named “The Price House”.  This hotelman, an amateur military historian,  loved to spin colorful tales and entertain his guests with jokes.

The hotel rate was two dollars a day.  Breakfast and lunch cost thirty-five cents each and supper was fifty cents.  Henry Flagler’s Royal Palm Hotel had Miami’s first and only swimming pool, but Price’s guests had privileges.

Henry and his wife, Lucy, later owned and operated the “Marion” apartments which she ran and managed after Henry’s death in 1916.

DOROTHY BRADDOCK PHERIGO
Obituary

Dorothy B. Pherigo passed away quietly on April 10, 2012 in Dallas, TX surrounded by the love of her family and many friends. She is survived by her husband, best friend, lover, and co-pilot of 54 years Richard; son William; daughter-in-law Cathy; grandson Matthew; son Jon; brother Bert; sister-in-law Jean; nephew Stuart; and niece Laura. Dorothy Braddock Pherigo was born in New Smyrna, FL on Oct. 20, 1933.

Dorothy loved flying private planes, painting, cooking, and gardening; but is most remembered in Dallas as the friendly and pleasantly cantankerous owner/operator of Collector's Records from 1979 to 1994.

Dorothy enjoyed seeing new places and travelled the world with her husband, occasionally letting someone else fly. They also attended the Dallas Symphony regularly. She was an avid fan of cooking shows, pro golf, slot machines, and the Dallas Cowboys. Dorothy was always involved with people and made friends with all whom she came into contact. At her request no memorial is being held.
