Husband Of Former Dorothy Taylor Dies In Texas
Members of the John Taylor family were called to East Bernard, Texas, this past week by the tragic death of Vantrom E. Andrews, Sr., 64, who was the husband of the former Dorothy Taylor, resident of Rayne many years ago and member of the Taylor family which contributed much to this community in the early 1900's.

Mr. Vantrom, a well-known citizen of the East Bernard-Rosenberg-Richmond area, had retired recently after a very successful adult lifetime spent in that community, and he had volunteered his services to assist in repainting his Church during renovation work underway at this time. On Monday afternoon, while working up on a ladder, he lost his footing and fell, receiving fatal injuries.

Widely attended funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in East Bernard, with Rev. Fred L. Holder, pastor, officiating. The overflow gathering of friends attested to the great esteem in which he was held by all who knew him, and the text of his life, while "about his Father's business" was the subject of a eulogy which will always remain as a lasting tribute to him. He is survived by his widow, the former Dorothy Taylor of East Bernard; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Kopecky of Rosenberg, and Mrs. Helen Sheridan of Sweeny, Texas; one son, Vantrom E. Andrews, Jr., of Rosenberg; his mother, Mrs. Florence McClure of Louisiana; a brother, Frodard Andrews of Louisiana; and seven grandchildren.

John A. Taylor, Sr., of New Orleans was joined by Mr. and Mrs. John A. Taylor, Jr., and Miss Helen Taylor for the trip to Rosenberg to be with the family in their bereavement.

SOCIETY . . . . Much local interest is attached to the recent marriage of Miss Philippa Helen Andrews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ventress E. Andrews of East Bernard, Texas, to Mr. Virgil L. Shaddox, son of Mr. L. Shaddox of Houston, Texas, the wedding having been solemnized at the home of the bride's parents on Wednesday, the 27th of October, at five o'clock in the afternoon.
Mrs. Andrews is the former Miss Dorothy Taylor, who made her home in Rayne for many years. The bride, who was given in marriage by her father, was beautifully attired in a hunter's green gabardine suite, worn with pecan brown accessories, and she used a shoulder corsage of white carnations.
Carrying out the tradition of "something old", she used as her only ornament a diamond sunburst brooch which belonged to her grandmother, Mrs. John Taylor, Sr. Miss Dorothy Andrews, the bride's sister was her only attendant, while Mr. James B. Lane of Rosenberg, Texas served as grooms-man. Following the ceremony, the happy young couple left by car for a wedding trip to San Antonio, Tex., and upon their return will make their home in Rosenberg, Texas where the groom holds a responsible position. The many Rayne friends of the Taylor family will be interested to have this news, and all join Tribune in sending along our heartiest congratulations and very best wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Shaddox.

104-year-old John Guedry has pleasant outlook on life

Maybe it's because his birthday is so close to Christmas, or maybe
he's just happy to have lived a long and rewarding life. Wha-
ever the reason, John Guedry, the oldest resident of The Hamp-
ton at Post Oak, likes to laugh. He turned 104 on Dec. 23.

Born in Louisiana in 1899, Guedry said he lived a happy, but hard,
life with his parents and siblings.

"My father was making $18 a month, and that's what we lived on.
That had to buy food, clothes, doctor bills — you name it. For 10 of
us," Guedry said. "I only have a sixth-grade education. I didn't get to go to school for very long, but that didn't keep me from learning. I worked so hard trying to get ahead."

Guedry has seen three centuries and two World Wars go by. He was drafted to serve during World War II, but at age 42 he didn't have to go into combat. When Guedry was 49, he met and married his wife, Rose. He has one stepdaughter, Catherine. The couple moved to Houston in 1957 when he was diagnosed with a heart ailment and his doctor told him he could no longer work on the farm. They moved to Hampton at Post Oak in 2002 when Rose needed assisted living. She passed away last year, at the age of 99.

Married for 53 years, Guedry said they enjoyed every minute they had together.

"That was the most important thing about our marriage," Guedry said. "We never exchanged a harsh word."

America was a different place 104 years ago. There were 46 states, and Houston just barely made it on the list of top 100 largest cities. 'The worst thing anybody can do is drink coffee. I never drank coffee. I think it's poison for a person.'
John Guedry By the time Guedry arrived, the Houston metro-area was close to a million people strong. Now Guedry said the biggest change he's seen is in the amount of traffic.

"When I first got here, you could go out to the street and not see an automobile for a half hour," Guedry said. "Now, it's just unbelievable."

It's also a little unbelievable to Guedry that he's lived such a long and remarkably healthy life.
"I don't know what I've been doing, but evidently it's the right thing," he said. But when pressed for details, Guedry came up with a couple of tips for longevity.

"The worst thing anybody can do is drink coffee. I never drank coffee. I think it's poison for a person. Whiskey wouldn't be any better. I don't advise you to drink that," he said.

These days, Guedry stays active by mingling with staff and fellow residents at Hampton. Aside from some hearing loss, he's in good health and fully independent. Roger Thiele, Hampton Post Oak executive director, said Guedry is inspiring.

"He just carries a smile everywhere he goes, so he encourages others," Thiele said. "He's a very special man who has aged very uniquely."

Executive, wife die in collision
A chemical company executive and his wife were killed
following a two-vehicle collision in southwest Houston
late Tuesday as they returned from a friend's house
following a church meeting, company officials said Wednesday. Wayne Andrews Goode, 47, district manager for water treatment at the Nalco Chemical Co. of Sugar Land, was dead on arrival at 12:45 a.m. Wednesday at Hermann Hospital where he was taken by a Life Flight helicopter, Houston police said. His wife, Nelva Karen Goodman Goode, 40, died at the scene of the 11:30 p.m. Tuesday collision in the 9300 block of South Braeswood, investigators said.
The driver of the other vehicle, Masen Mosa Shtieb, 26, of the 3700 block of Gessner, was undergoing treatment at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital for facial lacerations. Hospital officials said he was in satisfactory conditions. A passenger in his car, Monica Olssom, 21, of the 7900 block of Gironde in Missouri City, was treated at Memorial Southwest Hospital for facial abrasions and released. Police said the vehicle driven by Wayne Goode was northbound on Braes Forest and was pulling away from a stop sign after stopping when it was in collision with the eastbound vehicle driven by Shtieb on South Braeswood. Goode's secretary at Nalco Chemical Company, Mary Villarreal, said the Goode couple had apparently been to a church function in the southwest Houston area and were returning from a friend's house they had visited after attending church. She said Goode had worked for the company more than 20 years.

MEMORIALS: YMCA of Metropolitan Fort Worth, 512 Lamar, Fort Worth, Texas 76102. Lee Vaughn Williams Jr. was born Aug. 1, 1927, in Lorena to Lee Vaughn Sr. and Lillian Provine Williams. Lee spent his working career in Dallas with Sammons Enterprises, a $27 billion conglomerate of insurance, hotel, industrial and cable companies where he played a key policy-making role with the company.
Lee had a love of wildlife and the outdoors, and enjoyed relaxing on the scenic ranch he bought near Glen Rose in the early 1960s. After assembling a beautiful collection of exotic game animals, he named his beloved spread the Waterfall Ranch. Subsequent owners renamed it the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, and the same wide variety of species can still be seen there today. He also was an avid hunter in Alaska, Mexico, Texas and the Rockies.

FORT WORTH--Eddye Ruth Celeste Greene Anderson Williams died peacefully after a very brief illness on Tuesday, May 12, 2020.

SERVICE: Due to the current situation, a gathering to celebrate and rejoice this beautiful, elegant lady will be held on a date to be determined in the future.

MEMORIALS: In memory of Ruth, contributions can be made to All Saints Episcopal Church, 5001 Crestline Rd, Fort Worth, TX 76107 or Fort Worth Country Day, 4200 Country Day Ln, Fort Worth, TX 76106. Eddye Ruth was born April 27, 1932, in Shreveport, LA, as first child to Edgar Hartsell Greene (Pete) and Hilda Mae Riley Andrews Greene. (While she always hated the name Eddye, it became part of her colorful persona.) She met the love of her life, Jim Anderson, in math class their senior year at Paschal High School.
Jim went home that day and announced that he had met the girl he was going to marry. Ruth attended Columbia College in Missouri her freshman year. Lover-sick Jim sold his car to buy a one-way ticket to see her and sold blood for the trip home. She attended SMU for sophomore year where she was a member of Tri Delta. Ruth finished her college career at TCU with Jim, from which they both graduated in three years in order for Jim to attend Tulane Medical School that fall. After graduation, they were married in June 1955 and left for New Orleans as husband and wife. After medical school, they moved to Dallas where Jim completed his residency at Parkland and the couple be-came a family with the births of their son Cove and later, daughter Kay. True to her elegant self and in keeping with her husband's total devotion to her,
Jim secured a private suite at Parkland for a week for the birth of both children. The family then permanently relocated to Fort Worth where Jim had a successful OBGYN practice until his untimely death in 1970. Ruth remarried in December 1972 to Lee Williams.During their marriage of 42 years, they enjoyed travel, especially to Europe and Santa Fe. She volunteered at Cook Children's Hospital for decades, was a member of River Crest Country Club, Fort Worth Garden Club, Jewel Charity Ball, and The Junior League of Fort Worth. Ruth had many passions. She played with the same tennis group for 20 years and maintained those close friendships over the decades. Because River Crest was closed on Mondays, they would play at Er-ma Lowe's home under the watchful eye of Erma's pet camel. She was also an avid skier — Snowmass and Breckenridge were her favorite spots. And dressing for dinner in Aspen was just as imortant as looking fabulous on the slopes. (Even when home alone, she was dressed to the nines.)
She was a voracious reader and treasured her monthly book club.Ruth was known for her devotion to her animals, her life-long love of God, and her fierce and firm ideas and ideals—which were always intensely felt but never imposed on others. While her elegance shone through in her impeccable sense of fashion, her talent with calligraphy and her lovingly appointed home, Ruth also loved gardening and was known for her green thumb (gloved, of course). Ruth's style, grace and love for home will live on through her daughter Kay, owner of Kay Genua Designs. Most of all, Ruth loved and delighted over her fami- ly as matriarch, "mummy," "Ush," "the queen" and a force of nature, a commanding presence with a delightful sense of humor and infectious giggle.
This epitome of a Southern woman with gracious charm will be greatly missed. Ruth is preceded in death by her first love, husband James Covert Anderson; her son James Covert Anderson Jr. (Cove); her second husband Lee V Williams Jr.; and her sister Jan Greene.
SURVIVORS: Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Kay Anderson Genua; her grandchildren, Lexi and Ingrid Anderson (daughters of Cove Anderson), Riley and Harrison Genua; her brother, Jack Greene and his wife Judy; her nieces, Shelley Skiles Sawyer and her family and Whitney Greene Ligon and her family; her nephews, Harris Greene and his family and Garrett Greene and his family; and numerous cousins.

Louise A. Wilkins Weds George Van Fortenberry.
Louise A. Wilkins, daughter of Mrs. Augustus Andrews and the late Mr. Andrews, became the bride of George Van Fortenberry, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William James Fortenberry of Columbia at 4 p.m. Sunday at the home of the bride's mother, 807 James St. Dr. John E. Barnes Jr., pastor of Main Street Baptist Church, officiated at the double ring ceremony. Preceding the ceremony, Mrs. Grady Gilmore of Jackson, violinist, accompanied by Mrs. Herman Andrews, played At Dawning. Mrs. Andrews also accompanied T. L. Jacobs Jr., of Laurel, who sang Because and for the benediction The Wedding Prayer.
The conventional wedding marches also were played. Bride's Dress: The bride, given in marriage by her brother, Herman Andrews, wore an original model created by S. E. Moore Jr. of mauve silk organzine. The dress was styled with a fitted bodice. The low square neckline was embroidered in front with a lace design encrusted with paillettes and pearls. Her sleeves were brief and her afternoon-length skirt was slightly flared in front and had extreme back fullness falling from unpressed pleats. Her shoes were of black lace and her small hat of matching color was covered with sequins. She carried a cascade bouquet of pink Briarcliff roses with pale pink angel feathers forming the background and centered with a catalyea orchid.
Mrs. Robert Thrower, the bride's sister, was her matron of honor. She wore a matching color of rose silk. The bodice was fitted and the sweetheart neckline was edged with two rows of sequins. Her skirt was draped to the side. She wore black accessories. Her bouquet of grape-colored specimen chrysanthemums was tied with a bow of matching satin. John T. Marshall Jr., of Pensacola was best man. The bride's mother wore an original model of plum antique taffeta with black accessories and a corsage of a natural orchid. The couple stood before an improvised altar in front of the mantel which was banked with palms and was flanked by seven-pronged candelabra with pink tapers. Centering the mantel was an arrangement of pink gladioli, white chrysanthemums and pink asters. The candles were lighted by Paul Andrews, brother of the bride, while At Dawning was played on the piano and violin. Reception The reception followed the wedding ceremony. Greeting guests were Mrs. Henry C. New, Mrs. H. T. O'Bryan and Paul Andrews. The bride's table was spread with a cutwork Irish linen cloth, lined with pink. A seven-point candelabra with pink tapers centered the table. At one end was the three-tiered wedding cake, surrounded by shell pink Sweetheart roses and valley lilies. A miniature bridal couple stood beneath an arch of Sweetheart roses and lilies-of-the-valley on the top tier of the cake. Circling the base of the cake were ivy sprays tucked in loops of tulle. Mrs. Paul Andrews served the cake and Miss Carol New served punch from a crystal punch bowl. During the reception soft music was played by Miss Ruth Glenn, pianist, and Mrs. Grady Gilmore, violinist. Mrs. L. W. Wilson of Bogalusa presided in the gift room. The register was in charge of Miss Christine Jacobs.

The rehearsal supper was held at 5 p.m. Saturday at the home of the bride's mother. At this time, the couple presented gifts to their attendants. Pieces of costume jewelry were given the women and ties to the men. A buffet supper was served to members of the bridal party by Mrs. Andrews, the bride's mother, assisted by Mrs. H. T. O'Bryan.

Obituary for Bill Whitley
William Hines Whitley would tell everyone that he was a blessed man. He lived his dream. He was a satisfied man. Each day of his life he thanked God for his wife, his two sons and for Melissa and his grandsons.
Bill left this world behind on September 11, 2024, with a smile on his face as he lifted his gaze toward heaven. Bill was diagnosed with cancer this summer and was cared for at home by his wife Joann and two devoted sons. Bill had asked Jesus to be his Savior in his college days, and knew in his heart that he would be seeing Jesus face to face very soon. He trusted in that relationship to carry him through each day. Bill was born on December 14, 1949 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Bob and Mary Whitley. He attended Nathan Hale High School. After graduation, he attended Oklahoma State University, but got his degree at Tulsa Community College prior to pursuing a career in aviation.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Joann, his oldest son Jake and wife Melissa, his three grandsons: Denver, Wilson, and Hines, and his youngest son Scott. Bill also left behind his sister Jan Whitley of Tulsa and a half-brother Archie Hyde and wife Dixie of Savannah, Georgia, extended relatives and friends. Bill's love of flying was his lifelong pursuit, which led him first to Tulsair Beechcraft. After he achieved his private pilot's license, he began flying for multiple corporations, among which were Nordam and Parker Drilling. Bill and Joann met on a blind date while they were both working in different areas for Parker Drilling. They married two years later and were eventually proud parents of two boys: Jake and Scott. A few years later, Bill sought a more standardized schedule and started working for United Airlines.
Anyone knowing Bill first recognized his love of family and the outdoors. He was the happiest being outdoors with God's creation. He was an enthusiast of hunting, fishing, and God's beautiful world. Bill hunted for the joy of providing pheasant, quail, and crappie for his dinner table and others. Bill was a handyman with skills in carpentry, once building an elevated wooden fort for their backyard when the kids were young, and several other things over the years. He was also an artist in various mediums. But, to his family's delight, Bill was an accomplished chef, blending seasonings to a delectable degree.
Joann and Bill together enjoyed baseball, watching the St. Louis Cardinals. Their family vacations were often spent in Colorado, enjoying the serene lakes and countryside. Bill was a patriot that loved this country, and honored veterans to the ultimate. Bill served on the security team at Southern Hills Baptist Church where he conscientiously evaluated potential issues and dangers. He loved the men's fellowship at the church, attending many of the men's events around the state. Bill was a passionate believer in Jesus and in His Word. He witnessed faithfully throughout the years. Bill's greatest joy was when Melissa joined the family and made his life complete with his three grandsons: Denver, Wilson and Hines, to add to his collection of treasures.

Whitley-Tyrone Wedding Beautifully Solemnized
PRENTISS, Nov. 16 — In a brilliant ceremony at the Prentiss Baptist church Saturday, Nov. 14 at 6 p. m. Miss Helen Eloise Tyrone, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Earl Tyrone of Prentiss, became the bride of John Neal Whitley, son of V. P. Whitley and the late Mrs. Whitley of Morrilton, Ark.

Dr. L. E. Green, pastor, read the impressive double ring ritual.
A setting of unusual beauty was provided as the background for the simple, central floral arrangement of white chrysanthemums with a profusion of fern fronds, magnolia leaves, and Southern smilax. Graduated wrought iron cathedral candelabra twined with smilax held the white bridal tapers. In each window was an arrangement of greenery, smilax, ribbon and tapers, while pews of the ribbon section were marked with single white candles, chrysanthemums, wild huckleberry, and white satin ribbons. Prior to the ceremony a recital of music was presented by two close friends of the bride, Mrs. Truett Boyd, organist, and Miss Jacqueline Polk, vocalist. Mrs. Boyd's numbers included the bride's favorite classical and ballad selections. Miss Polk sang "Through the Years" and "Because." "Saviour Like a Shepherd" was the accompaniment to the benediction. The attractive bride, entering on the arm of her father, who gave her in marriage, was lovely in her wedding gown of antique candlelight satin, an original designed by William Schwartz, made on the new Empire lines, and featuring a long, fitted bodice, high standup collar and fitted sleeves ending in lily points over the hand. The only trim consisted of tiny self-covered buttons at the wrists. The full skirt ended in a graceful Cathedral train, and featured unpressed pleats cased in at the hipline of the long bodice. The full, tiered wedding veil of sheerest imported illusion fell gracefully from a half Juliet cap of matching satin. She carried a beautiful arm bouquet of snow white bride's roses. The bride chose as her matron of honor her cousin, Mrs. Wallace D. Burch III, (Evelyn Allen) of Nashville, Tenn. Bridesmaids were Miss Peggy Berry of Prentiss, Mrs. Nedra Odom, Mrs. F. M. Hurst, Jr. and Mrs. G. M. Hunt, all of Baton Rouge.

Winter Green Velvet
They were attired in identical dresses of winter green velvet, featuring fitted bodices, full skirts and bertha type yokes of self material. They carried cascade bouquets of large bronze chrysanthemums, and wore green velvet lover's knots in their hair. Usher-groomsmen were Robert E. Davis of Prentiss, Charles Darnell of Baton Rouge, La., Benton Dunn of Pine Bluff, Ark., and A. D. Harper of Montgomery, Ala. The bridegroom was attended by his father as best man.The bride's mother was attired for her daughter's wedding in a formal dress of ashes of roses tissue faille with bugle bead trim, and wore as her corsage a single chrysanthemum in a harmonizing shade. Immediately following the wedding a brilliant reception was held at "Tyrone Acres," lovely old home of the bride's parents and her paternal grandparents in the days of long ago. The home has been known as a center for gracious living over the years. Various kinds of punch were served from flower-bedecked punch bowls in the dining and living rooms. The bride's table, covered with an embroidered linen cloth, was centered with the three tiered cake, embossed in lilies of the valley and bride's roses, surrounded with lace fern and pompon chrysanthemums. Spun sugar wedding bells filled with tuberoses help to share the festoons of white tulle ribbon that further enhanced the decor. Throughout the rooms decorations consisted of white bridal flowers and magnolia leaves.

Honeymoon Trip
For traveling the bride changed to a handsome going-away suit in a warm shade of brown, with bag and pan velvet hat of a darker shade, reptile shoes, beige gloves and scarf. Topaz costume jewelry and a chrysanthemum corsage completed her ensemble. After their honeymoon they will be at home at Baton Rouge where the bride is employed as buyer for Dalton's and the bridegroom is engaged in the insurance business.

Rehearsal Supper
Following the rehearsal Friday the Tyrones, aunts and uncles of the bride-elect, entertained at the rehearsal supper, which was held at the home of Miss Tyrone's late paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Tyrone, now the home of her aunt, Miss Carolyn Tyrone. Punch was served throughout the evening. Friends of the Tyrones assisted with the serving and entertaining the guests. About 50 guests, including the bridal party, family of the bridal couple and intimate friends enjoyed this occasion. For Out-of-Town Guests Saturday at 1 o'clock in the afternoon a delightful courtesy was tendered the out-of-town wedding guests at the C. R. Quinn home when the hostesses were Mrs. Quinn, Mrs. P. A. Dale, Mrs. M. M. Davis, and Mrs. G. W. Berry. Friday was the occasion of the luncheon honoring the bride, Miss Tyrone, and her attendants, when Mrs. Truett Boyd and Mrs. F. A. Parker were hostesses at the Parker home. Other guests included the bride's mother, and aunt, Mrs. Robert Womack of Birmingham, Ala. For the event Miss Tyrone wore a black taffeta suit with matching accessories. Pink rosebuds were used as decorations in the living room and dining room. The hostesses' gift was a silver sandwich tray.

CHARLES L. ANDREWS HOUSE

BOYNTON BEACH — Sparked by the sounds of a big yellow excavator in the neighborhood, local preservationists are rallying to preserve the Andrews Home, Boynton Beach's oldest residence.

A permit was issued to demolish the faded, yellow building, a stone's throw west of the Florida East Coast Railway tracks on Southeast First Avenue. The half-acre property is zoned mixed-use, which allows retail and apartments.

"When I saw the excavator, I told other historians. We contacted city officials. They talked to the owners," said resident Tom Warnke, a member of the Boynton Beach Historical Society.

During Thanksgiving week, city officials persuaded the owners to postpone the teardown, according to Deputy City Manager Andrew Mack. "We will be working with the Historical Society to ultimately find the perfect location for the Andrews House," Mack said in a written statement. Built in 1901 of dense Dade County pine, the two-story structure with exposed rafters has a wrap-around porch, armoires instead of closets and built-in steel rods to hold the building together during a hurricane. "The steps don't even creak. That's how sound that Dade County pine is," said Cindy Martel, an Ocean Ridge resident who is working to save the vacant, boarded-up structure at 106 SE 1st Ave. The amber-red pine is one of the most prized hardwoods in the world. Known for its ability to resist rotting and termites, the native Florida wood must be pre-drilled to be nailed. Dade County pine is now protected and cannot be harvested. The half acre where the Andrews House sits is owned by 118 North Project LLC in South Miami, according to the Florida Division of Corporations. The registered agent, Manuel Mair, could not be reached for comment.

Why saving the historic home is so important to residents

Saving the structure drew support from city commissioners at a Dec. 3 meeting. Commissioners told staff to come back with ideas in January on the cost of moving the building, analyzing the building's structure and finding a new location for the home. "A lot of upkeep needs to be done to meet today's codes," said Boynton Beach Mayor Ty Penserga. Goodwill with residents — as important to developers as strong cement — will result if the home is preserved, said Victor Martel, a retired dentist in favor of preserving the building. "Saving the home will show that the developer cares about local residents. That's great public relations," said Martel. Several ideas from preservationists and city officials were floated at the Dec. 3 meeting. They include: • Using impact fees — one-time payments paid by developers to offset the impact of their project — rather than tax dollars to pay for moving and renovating the Andrews House. • Moving the building close to the nearby 1913-built Oscar Magnuson House at 111 East Ocean Ave. and renovating it to be a small business or museum.
Much like the Addison Mizner-designed Woman's Club on U.S. 1, the Andrews House could be a venue for community gatherings. • The developer could give the building to a person or entity that would pay the moving costs. The new owner would place the building at a new location. • Setting up a fund to collect contributions from the public to save the building. Moving the home would cost between $75,000 and $100,000, said Warnke, who called a company that moved buildings to Sundy Village in Delray Beach to get that estimate. "The Andrews House is more than just a building; it's a symbol of our city's roots and a bridge to the past," said Dr. Ginger Pedersen, a local historian. "Its loss represents a growing challenge in preserving the architectural and cultural identity of Boynton Beach."
Built in 1907 of dense Dade County pine, the two-story structure with exposed rafters has a wrap-around porch, armoires instead of closets and built-in steel rods to hold the building together during a hurricane.

History of the Andrews Home dates back to post-Civil War days
The Andrews Home is named after Charles Lee and Katie Andrews. Charles served as a Confederate soldier, and after the Civil War married Katie, who was 42 years younger. Charles died in 1933, and Katie remained in the home. The frame vernacular home was built by pioneer dairyman Neil Kapp sometime between 1901 and 1907. Many frame homes were built in the early part of the 20th century, but hurricanes and fires destroyed quite a few, according to historian Janet DeVries Naughton. Katie Andrews collected Charles' Civil War pension until she died in 1973, making her the last Civil War pensioner in Palm Beach County, according to records from the Boynton Beach Historical Society.
The couple had two sons, George Gerritt and Charles Lee Jr., who built ran a grocery store in Boynton Beach. George and his wife, Edith, lived in the Andrews home until George died in 1980. Edith moved into a nearby apartment, and the home fell into disrepair. The deteriorating house was bought in 2000 by Boynton Beach resident and history buff Bob Katz. Katz earned millions from an investment he made in a platinum mine in Indonesia. Katz hired local historian Jim Warnke, Tom's father and former mayor of Boynton Beach, to do a major renovation of the home. Katz died in 2006. The home again fell into disrepair. The building has been vacant since then.
