Laurence Herbert Turner
Laurence Herbert Turner, 78, born Feb. 2, 1937 in Pierson, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on December 10, 2015 after a lengthy illness. He was the son of Willie Herbert Turner and Pearl Carlisle Turner.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Mellie Jo, his sister Barbara Jean Bennett, two sons, Lance and Brandon and his wife Stacy. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Delanie and Brandi and one grandson, Inti.
He graduated from Pierson High School in 1955, where he was a standout athlete, earning four varsity letters in baseball and three varsity letters in basketball. He was named all-conference in baseball and basketball in his junior and senior years. His highest scoring basketball game was a 29 point effort against Bunnell High School. He was the only underclassman starter on the 1953 basketball team and played that year in the state finals. He was inducted into the Taylor High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
Throughout his school years, he was feared far and wide as an unbeatable marbles player. He attended Florida Southern College 1956-57 where he played baseball and was in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1960, serving at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, then in the Army Reserves for six years. After serving in the Army, he returned home to run the family business, W. H. Turner and Son Ferneries, with his father. He continued to work in the fern industry for more than 50 years. He was a coach and teammate to just about everybody in town, and a teacher in many ways to everyone else, especially his sons. Since childhood, he faithfully attended the Pierson United Methodist Church and held many church offices. He was a renowned sportsman, fisherman and biscuit maker. This time of year, you’d likely be able to find him on the Blue Creek Road with his life-long friends and best hunting dogs. Every other chance he would get he’d be in his fishing boat on the St. Johns River or in the 10,000 Islands down south in Chokoloskee. He swore his sons to secrecy before revealing his favorite fishing holes, so fellas don’t bother asking.
The viewing will be held 6-8pm Monday, December 14 at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Homes, 126 E. New York Ave., DeLand, Florida. The Funeral Service will be held 11am Tuesday, December 15 at Pierson United Methodist Church, with Reverend Matt Findley officiating. Interment will follow at Pierson United Methodist Cemetery.
The family would like to express deep appreciation to Halifax Health Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion. Donations can be sent to Halifax Health Hospice, 3800 Woodbriar Tr., Port Orange, FL 32129. Online condolences may be made at www.allensummerhill.com. Allen-Summerhill DeLand is in charge of arrangements.
