Richard W. Vass

Richard W. Vass was born in Newton County, Georgia on may 20 1842 and died November 26, 1914 in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida and is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, West Palm Beach, Florida.  He was son of Thomas Jefferson Vass and Elizabeth Alexander. Thomas and Elizabeth are found in Volusia County Florida in 1860, but in different households as Thomas is shown as living alone per the 1860 census but his children are shown as living with Elizabeth Vass and Alexander Rose in the same area. This strange relationship also is shown in Georgia prior to both families removal to Florida. In 1880 we find Thomas with another wife, Susan A. Davis whom he married in 1870, there in Volusia County Florida.

Richard W. Vass was living in St. Augustine Florida and enlisted April 7, 1862 at the age of 19 as a private in Company B, Florida Third Infantry Regiment and was mustered out Nov. 1, 1862.

Richard’s brother, James Franklin Vass owned a livery stable in Volusia County and prior to Richard moving to West Palm Beach this is where he worked. In 1909, Richard’s house on Herbert Avenue burned to the ground.  Richard and his wife, Mary, knew nothing of it until they returned where they found they had lost everything. He did rebuild the house, but shortly thereafter, the family removed to West Palm Beach.  Richard’s first wife, Elizabeth, had already moved to West Palm Beach in 1886.  James Franklin. Vass himself a Confederate Veteran, died in September 1909 and was buried in Pinewood Cemetery, Daytona Beach, Florida.

Richard married first Elizabeth C. Savage about 1870, by whom he had two children, Mary Jane Vass and William Thomas Vass. Richard married secondly prior to 1898 , Mary S Ross by whom he had two more children, Lottie, born in 1898 and Beatrice, who was born in 1908.

Richard’s first wife Elizabeth, was born December 24, 1849 in South Carolina and died 1924 in Gadsden Florida. She had made her home for over 30 years with her daughter Mrs. Frank Adams (Mary Jane).  Mary Jane’s husband, Frank, was a carpenter in West Palm Beach. Apparently Richard and Elizabeth were divorced prior to Richard’s marriage to Mary S Ross.  In Mary Jane Adam’s obituary, it is mentioned that she is survived by two half-sisters, Mrs. Joseph Willard Cline (Lottie) of Palm City, Florida who was married to Joseph Willard Cline, and Mrs. J. D. Gattis (Beatrice) of West Palm Beach, Florida, who was married to James D. Gattis.

MRS. ELIZABETH VASS DIES IN NORTH FLORIDA

One of West Palm Beach's oldest women residents, Mrs. Elizabetyh Vass, died at River Junction Monday where she had been under medical treatment for several years, it was learned by relatives here.  Until she went to the north Florida town for treatment, Mrs. Vass had spent almost 30 years here making her home with a daughter, Mrs. Frank Adams of 439 Evernia street.  She was 76 years old.

The body has been consigned to this city for burial and is expected to reach here Thuesday night.  The funeral is expected to take place here Wednesday in charge of the Ferguson undertaking company, although details have not been arranged.

Mrs. Vass was a native of North Carolina but came to Palm Beach county when West Palm Beach was hardly more than a village and until she went to River Junction had passed all her days here.  Besides her daughter, Mrs. Vass is survived by a son, William T. Vass of this city.

Thomas J. Voss is found with his family in Newton Co, GA. Next door is Eliza Alexander with children Richard, James, Albert, and Victoria. Thomas's wife Elizabeth's maiden name is Alexander....so if Eliza her sister in law?? Family story is that Thomas J. was quite a ladie's man and left his GA family and started another family in Flotida. WeI find Thomas J. in 1860 census records in Volusia County, FL living alone. In next household is Alexander Rose and Eliza Vass with children James Vass, Richard Vass, Britt Vass, and Victoria Vass. However, in that 1850 Georgia Census the four children have the last name of Alexander, but by 1860 the names are Vass. which is what they were known as.  These are obviously the same people as living next door to him in 1850 in GA. Trying to figure out what relation Eliza is to Thomas or did he run off with his neighbor?? Elizabeth, his wife is found in 1880 living with her son while Thomas is found in Volusia County, FL living with a new wife Susan A. Davis whom we have a marriage date of July 28, 1870 there in Valusia County. From 1860 to 1880, Richard, James, & Victoria Vass are found living with or next to Thomas Vass.

In 1850, Newton County, Georgia Thomas is shown with wife Elizabeth (age 40) and six children: Melchesadek Dickson, Pinkney Nathaniel, Charles Alford, Mary, Uriah and Fields.  These children did not move to Florida but either stayed in Georgia or migrated out to Alabama and Arkansas albeit at very young ages.  Next door we have another Elizabeth known as Eliza with a last name of Alexander (age 38) with four children: James, Richard, Albert and Victoria ages 7 to 2 years also named Alexander.  These four children are the ones found in 1860 in Florida living next door again to Thomas J. who was living alone, but their surname is now Vass.  Also, living in that household with "Eliza" was a gentleman by the name of Alexander Rose.  The Rose family looks to be closely connected with the Voss's as we find young  Pinckney out in Arkansas wiith a C. A. Rose and family.  There does not seem to be a record of an Elizabeth Voss in the 1860's Georgia Census.  So what are we looking at?  Could the Eliza Alexander and Elizabeth Alexander (Thomas J's legal wife) be the same person but living separately from Thomas J.  Another question is posed as to why the first six children did not make the move to Florida...They were all in their teens and early twenties.  We know that by July, 1870 Thomas J. remarried.  We do not know where Elizabeth is at that time.  She doe show up again in the Alabama 1880 Census living with her son Uriah so we must assume that she and Thomas had split.

In 1870 we find Richard and his wife and daughter living with Thomas J.

Thomas J. is known or recorded as VOSS in GA but in FL, he is recorded as VASS.
